Getting rid of old fishing gear is another issue connected to the waste problem but thanks to the efforts of Covanta Energy, their Fishing for Energy program should take a load of fishermen who want to get rid of their old fishing gear. The company will accept and process all marine debris for free which could be an added expense for fishermen if they do it on their own. The Fishing for Energy program started in Hawaii where Covanta employees were searching for solutions to help the waste problem connected with the environment.
