The 40th Bassmaster Classic championship will kick off this Friday but many anglers are not expecting to reel in big catches. In fact, many of them are expecting a slow day of fishing over there, putting the blame on the cold waters in Lay Lake and the muddy conditions of the Coosa River. A bright note is that warmer weather has been forecasted over the weekend but for now, it is purely touch and go.

The place to be this February 20 should be at the SouthBrook Nature Park as the first Ice Fishing Derby is set to kick off. Registration will start at 12:30 p.m. and participants can start fishing at around 1:30 p.m. Treats and prizes await participants where kids aged 14 and below are likewise welcome to join. The event is free and baits and fishing rods will be available if needed.

Thousands of anglers were on hand at the Lake Le Homme Dieu for the 2010 Ice Fishing Challenge where only one will go home with the top prize. More than 100 people were in attendance where David Teske came out on top with his 2.14 Northern catch that won him a brand new Ford Truck.

The Alexandria Ice Fishing Challenge is all set to kick off tomorrow as crews began drilling holes today for the big tourney. The weather was supportive as many volunteers drilled 5,000 holes to prepare for the Alexandria Ice Fishing Challenge. The tournament is also bringing some good business to Christopherson Bait Shop. Anglers are already filing in to buy tickets and supplies.

The 12th Annual American Legion Community Fishing contest has gotten underway over at Fish Hook Lake where about 1,750 anglers were on hand. The participants may have dwindled compared to past years but the event was still a success. There was approximately 20 to 22 inches of ice in most places. The first fish was registered and weighed at 1:02 p.m.

Folks over at Michigan are sure to be eagerly awaiting the annual Michigan Winter Free Fishing this coming weekend where practically anyone can fish without a fishing license. On that note, expect a lot of people to join in on the festivities and take part in this annual gathering. All state regulations still apply.

It looks like the Williams Dam Public Campgrounds will no longer be a suitable place to fish and visit as the state of Indiana plans to shut down the camp this coming March. The small campground is part of the Williams Dam Public Fishing Area which unfortunately will be phased out.

Kids residing in Minnesota who are aged 16 years and above can look forward to some ice fishing this coming February 13 to 15. Some parks over at Minnesota are offering Take-A-Kid Ice Fishing weekend clinics which offer an indoor presentation on ice fishing safety, gear and techniques. They are being offered at Lake Bronson near Hallock, Lake Carlos near Alexandria and Bear Head Lake near Ely.
