Chinook fishing will be closing on August 4 at the Snake River after the total allowed catch of 2,000 hatchery Chinook has been landed. The closure was recommended by the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife and Idaho Fish and Game Biologists.

Anglers over in Rhode Island can look forward to free saltwater fishing on Sunday which will be part of the Governor’s Bay Day Activities.

A state recreational fishing license or registration with the National Saltwater Angler Registry is not required for saltwater anglers fishing in Rhode Island waters on Sunday, despite the state’s recently passed saltwater fishing license law.

Kids Fishing Derby at Holiday Harbor

The annual Kids Fishing Derby at Holiday Harbor will be held this August 14 for ages 5 to 15. This will be hosted by the Canyon Lake Bassmasters whose funds are unfortunately limited due to the current economic conditions.

The Bassmasters will supply some bait (while supply lasts); however, children should plan to bring their own fishing poles and favorite baits.All participants must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian at all times.

Guangdon Halts Fishing Due to Copper Waste Leaks

The Guangdong province has stopped fishing in the Ting River after the Zijin Mining Group Co.’s waste spill worsened over in china. Acidic waste leaking from Zijin’s biggest copper plant is spreading to Guangdong province from Fujian, where it poisoned enough fish to feed 72,000 residents for a year.

Guangdong is closely monitoring the water quality and evaluating whether the spill has poisoned drinking water as well.

Fishing Derby for Autistic Children

The Somerset County Police Chief Association hosted a fishing derby for the kids over at Camp Okee Sunokee. The camp focuses on accommodating kids with disabilities or Asperger syndrome where police officers acted as fishing guides during the derby.

They assisted the campers who were using bamboo cane poles provided by the Somerset County Park Rangers.

Catch and Release Fishing in Mississippi Resumes

The Mississippi State approved the catch and release fishing together with live bait shrimping while commercial fishing remains off-limits. Fish must be immediately returned to the water to increase the chance of survival, according to an announcement from the two departments.

July 17 will signal the start of National Fishing Month and this will run up all the way to August 15. Among the aims will be a plan to demonstrate that the sport can be diverse and that heading to the water with fishing tackle is not just a pastime for able-bodied white males.

This event will replace National Fishing Week and the organizers believe the longer time span will be appreciated by anglers who can enjoy a wide range of events in their local area over the course of the four weeks.

Kids can do something productive this coming weekend as the Gunpowder Falls State Park holds a catch-and-release fishing derby. A casting contest is set for 11:30 p.m. Prizes, trophies and certificates will be presented after the casting contest. The cost to join is $12 per angler.
