The State Wildlife and Fisheries Commission met in Baton Rouge to discuss the potential lifting of the sport fishing ban for some parts of Northshore water. This has something to do with the oil spill, much of which has been cleared and may potentially free up the area for fishing once again.

With over 100 kids on hand at the Dumaresq Dam for the St. Kilda Fishing Day, the event was an overwhelming success. The event is held annually for over 10 years and Sunday’s event is one of the biggest ever.
The biggest fish caught on the day was a 65cm long trout, which was reeled in by youngster Hugh Ord.

A Kids Fishing Contest is being held at the Piers at Willow River State Park where young anglers can sign up for only $1. Registration will start at 8:30 am where they will also receive a grab bag. Bait will be provided and there will be three age divisions.
Each age group fishes for 45 minutes and prizes are awarded afterwards for the biggest fish, the smallest fish, and the most fish.

It is that time of the year again when fishing may be scarce and then again not. Salmons are coming in while lake trouts are moving out.
Now would be an exceptional time to fish offshore, about 150 to 200 feet of water fishing the top 50 feet. Look for scum lines and bugs on the surface.

This weekend should draw in a lot of anglers over in Alberta as residents can fish on any non-national park body of water this weekend without needing a license. This special promo is run twice a year by Sustainable Resources and have been lauded by Alberta residents each year.

The 17th Annual Get Hooked on Fishing Not Drugs or Crime will kick off on August 7 at the Calder and Hebble canal Wakefield/Horbury. Interested anglers are being urged to register their interest early to secure their entry. Applications forms must be returned as early as August 2.

Shoreline fishing licenses will now be free in Florida. This resulted after the Florida Legislature decided to repeal the $9 fee although anglers are requested to continue to apply for licenses since the state program can pre-empt a more expensive federal fishing license which would otherwise be required.

Trout fishing may yet render lesser trouts if the Summer heat temperature continue. Rising to temperatures hitting the 70s, trouts may very well be dead before any angler would be able to catch them. Blame it on the weather or better yet the weird weather brought about by global warming.

PEI Mammal Biologists have identified the death of a young whale to fishing gear. Apparently whales do reside in the ocean and while they were not done on purpose, they are collateral damage for fishers exploring the ocean.
The female minke whale was found June 16 on the North Shore east of St. Peters. It was the eighth whale to be found on an Island beach over the past 20 years.
